There’s a particular kind of unease that settles in when you grab your deck railing and it moves. Not a little. Actually moves — shifting under your hand like it’s thinking about letting go. I felt that exact feeling one Saturday morning last spring when my 10-year-old leaned against the railing to watch a bird in the yard. My stomach dropped. That railing had been on the back of our house since before we moved in, and Connecticut winters had done what Connecticut winters do: freeze, thaw, repeat, until the wood was soft in spots and the posts were barely holding their ground.

Why Deck Railings Fail Faster in Connecticut
If you live in Connecticut, you already know our climate is rough on outdoor wood. We cycle through freeze-thaw patterns all winter, we get humid summers, and wet springs that soak right into any wood that isn’t properly sealed. That moisture-to-freeze cycle is particularly brutal on deck posts, which sit close to the surface and absorb water at their bases.
Older decks built with untreated or low-grade pressure-treated lumber are especially vulnerable. Even properly treated lumber from the 1990s and early 2000s used a preservative — CCA (chromated copper arsenate) — that was phased out for residential use. If your deck is more than 20 years old, it’s worth checking the EPA’s information on CCA-treated wood to understand what you’re working with before you start cutting.
The other thing that gets Connecticut decks into trouble is improper post attachment. Posts that are face-bolted to a rim joist rather than set on proper post bases are especially prone to rot, because they trap moisture right at the connection point. When I pulled my failed posts off, I could see exactly where the wood had been sitting wet for years.
Understanding Connecticut Building Code for Deck Railings
Before you buy a single board, you need to understand what the code requires. Connecticut follows the International Residential Code with state amendments, and the rules for deck railings are non-negotiable from a safety standpoint:
- Railings are required on any deck surface 30 inches or more above grade.
- Minimum railing height is 36 inches for decks less than 8 feet off the ground, and 42 inches for higher decks.
- Baluster spacing must not allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through — this is a child safety requirement.
- The railing system must withstand a 200-pound horizontal load applied to the top rail.
Check with your local building department before you start. Some Connecticut towns require a permit for railing replacement, especially if you’re changing the structure. A quick call takes five minutes and saves you a headache later. I’ve learned that lesson the hard way on other projects.
What You’ll Need
For a standard section of deck railing, gather the following:
- Pressure-treated 4×4 posts (rated for ground contact — look for UC4B or UC4C labeling)
- Pressure-treated 2×4 lumber for top and bottom rails
- Pressure-treated or composite balusters (1.5-inch square, typically)
- Post base hardware (Simpson Strong-Tie or equivalent surface-mount post bases)
- Structural screws or through-bolts (3/8-inch carriage bolts for post attachment)
- Exterior-grade deck screws (3-inch and 1.5-inch)
- Post caps (optional but recommended to shed water)
- Exterior wood sealer or stain
- Drill and impact driver
- Circular saw or miter saw
- Level (4-foot)
- Speed square
- Tape measure
- Hammer and pry bar
- Safety glasses and work gloves

Step 1 — Remove the Old Railing Safely
Start by removing everything — posts, rails, and balusters — down to the deck surface. Work from the top down. Remove the top rail first, then the balusters, then tackle the posts. Use your pry bar carefully. You don’t want to damage the decking boards or the rim joist if you can help it.
My 15-year-old handled the pry bar while I kept things steady. My 12-year-old sorted the old hardware into a bucket as we went — stainless versus galvanized, usable versus garbage. A small job, but it teaches the kind of organized thinking that matters. Even my 6-year-old had a role: he carried tools back and forth to the garage and felt every bit as useful as anyone else out there.
Once the old posts are off, inspect the rim joist or framing where they were attached. If you see soft, punky wood or dark staining deep into the grain, you may have rot in the substructure. Probe it with a screwdriver. If it sinks in without resistance, that area needs to be addressed before you install anything new. If it’s solid, you’re ready to move forward.
Step 2 — Install New Post Bases
Rather than face-bolting your new posts directly to the rim joist (the old method that caused the rot in the first place), use surface-mount post bases. These are metal brackets that elevate the post slightly off the deck surface, allowing water to drain away instead of pooling at the wood joint.
Position your post bases at the corners first, then space intermediate posts no more than 6 feet apart — closer if your design requires it. Use a chalk line to keep everything aligned. Fasten the bases with structural screws or structural bolts per the manufacturer’s specs. This isn’t the place to improvise — the post bases are what transfers that 200-pound load requirement into the structure.
Plumb each base with your level before you drive the final fasteners. A post that starts crooked will be crooked forever.
Step 3 — Set and Brace the Posts
Cut your 4×4 posts to height. If your deck is less than 8 feet off the ground, your finished railing height must be at least 36 inches. That means your post needs to be tall enough to accommodate the top rail sitting on top of it — so measure accordingly. I typically cut posts to 38 inches above the decking surface to give myself a comfortable margin when the top rail goes on.
Set each post into its base and drive the fasteners. Use your 4-foot level to confirm the post is plumb on both faces before you fully tighten. Brace the posts temporarily with a scrap 2×4 screwed diagonally across two posts while you work — this keeps everything from racking while you build out the rail sections.
Step 4 — Install Bottom and Top Rails
Cut your 2×4 rails to fit between the posts. For the bottom rail, I like to keep it at least 3 to 4 inches above the decking surface. This lets water drain, lets you sweep the deck without fighting the railing, and keeps the bottom rail from sitting in standing water after rain.
Fasten the top and bottom rails to the posts using structural screws or metal rail brackets — whichever your design calls for. Make sure everything is level. Use your level on both rails before driving final fasteners. A railing that looks slightly tilted will drive you crazy every time you step outside.
Step 5 — Install the Balusters
This is the most repetitive part of the job, but it goes faster than you’d think. Measure your total rail span and calculate your baluster spacing so that no gap exceeds 3.5 inches (leaving a margin under the 4-inch code limit). There are free baluster spacing calculators online that make this math easy — or you can do it by hand.
Cut all your balusters to the same length before you start installing. Consistency matters here. Use a spacer block — cut from a scrap piece of wood — to maintain even spacing as you work. My 12-year-old held the spacer while I drove screws. We found a rhythm and knocked out a full 16-foot section in about 45 minutes.
Fasten each baluster to the top and bottom rails with two deck screws at each end. Pre-drill to avoid splitting. Drive the screws at a slight angle for better holding power.
Step 6 — Add Post Caps and Seal Everything
Post caps do two things: they look finished, and they shed water off the end grain of the post. End grain is where wood absorbs moisture fastest. A simple metal or vinyl cap goes a long way toward extending the life of your posts. Drive a single screw through the cap into the post top to keep it in place.
Once the railing is fully assembled, apply a quality exterior wood sealer or stain to any raw cut ends and to the entire railing system if it isn’t already treated or composite. Pay special attention to end cuts — anywhere you’ve sawed through the wood is a moisture entry point. This is also a great time to seal or re-stain the rest of your deck surface if it needs it.

Step 7 — Load Test Your Work
This is not optional. Before you let anyone lean on that railing, test it yourself. Grab the top rail near each post and apply firm outward pressure. The railing should feel absolutely solid. No flex, no movement, no groan. Walk the length of the railing and test at every post location.
If anything moves, find the weak point and reinforce it before you call the job done. Code requires 200 pounds of lateral load resistance. You want to know your railing exceeds that before your kids are leaning on it.
When everything passed my test, I had my 10-year-old come out and give it a push. He leaned his whole weight into it and looked up at me. “That’s not going anywhere,” he said. That’s exactly what I wanted to hear. That’s real money saved — and in our case, it went right back into the family budget where it belongs. We don’t spend money we don’t have to, and every project we do ourselves is a small act of stewardship. When to Call a Professional Instead
If your rim joist or deck framing shows significant rot, stop and call a licensed contractor. Structural wood repair at the framing level is beyond the scope of a railing replacement and needs professional assessment. Similarly, if your deck was built without proper footings or if the ledger board attachment to the house looks compromised, that’s a structural issue that requires an expert eye. There’s no shame in knowing where a project ends and professional territory begins. The goal is always a safe home for your family — and sometimes that means making the call.
A Solid Railing and a Saturday Well Spent
By Sunday afternoon, we had a clean, solid, code-compliant railing that didn’t move a fraction of an inch when you pushed on it. My wife came out with lemonade, stood at the railing, and looked out over the yard. “It looks brand new,” she said. It basically was.
We cleaned up the tools, swept the deck, and sat outside for a while as a family. My 6-year-old ran his hand back and forth along the balusters the whole time, absolutely delighted that it was something we built together. That moment is worth more than the $300 in materials I spent — and infinitely more than the $1,500 I didn’t have to pay a contractor.
If your deck railing is wobbling, cracking, or just plain rotted, don’t put this one off. It’s a safety issue, and it only gets worse over a Connecticut winter.
