Turn the thumb-turn and confirm that the bolt extends and retracts smoothly without binding. If it sticks, slightly loosen the cylinder screws and check that everything is properly aligned before retightening.
Step 5 — Mark and Install the Strike Plate
Close the door until the deadbolt bolt contacts the door frame. Apply a small amount of lipstick, dark marker, or even crayon to the end of the bolt, then close the door gently and turn the thumb-turn so the bolt marks the frame. This gives you the exact location for your strike plate hole.
Use your hole saw or a chisel and sharp drill bit to bore the strike box cavity into the door frame. This needs to be deep enough for the full bolt throw — typically 1 inch. Then chisel a shallow mortise for the strike plate itself, just like you did on the door edge, so it sits flush with the door jamb.
Here’s the part that matters most: install the strike plate using 3-inch screws driven through the jamb and into the structural framing behind it. This is what separates a real security upgrade from a decorative one. Short screws hold the plate to the jamb only — one good kick can split the jamb away. Long screws anchor the whole assembly into the stud behind the trim, and that changes everything.
