A note on matching shingles: This is harder than it sounds. Shingles fade over time, and a brand new shingle on a 15-year-old roof will stand out. Check your attic or garage — some builders leave extra shingles behind. If not, bring a photo of your roof to the hardware store and try to get as close a match as possible in color and style. The difference fades over time as the new shingle weathers.

Step 1 — Inspect and Assess the Damage

Before you get on the roof, do a ground-level inspection first. Binoculars are genuinely useful here. Look for:

  • Missing shingles (obvious gaps in the pattern)
  • Curled or cupped shingles (edges turning up or corners lifting)
  • Cracked or broken shingles
  • Shingles with granule loss (bald patches where the protective coating has worn away)
  • Dark staining or streaking (can indicate algae or moisture under the surface)

Once you’re up on the roof, press gently on the surrounding shingles and the decking underneath. If the decking feels soft or spongy, you may have rot underneath — that’s a bigger job and worth getting a professional assessment. Solid decking is non-negotiable. You’re nailing into it, and it needs to hold.

Also check the gutters along the affected area for large amounts of granule buildup — that’s a sign the shingles in that zone are nearing the end of their life, and you may be patching symptoms rather than addressing a larger wear pattern.

Step 2 — Remove the Damaged Shingle

Asphalt shingles are held in place by nails and by a self-sealing adhesive strip that bonds them to the shingle below. You need to break both of those bonds without damaging the surrounding shingles.

Start by gently lifting the edges of the shingles above the damaged one. You’re trying to expose the nails that hold the damaged shingle in place. In warm weather, the adhesive bond is strong and takes some effort to break. In cold weather — below about 40°F — shingles become brittle and can crack if you’re too aggressive. Connecticut falls and springs can swing either way, so work carefully and deliberately.

Use your flat pry bar to slide under the damaged shingle and pop out the nails. Most standard three-tab shingles have four nails across; architectural (dimensional) shingles may have more. Remove every nail completely — don’t just bend them down. Once the nails are out, slide the damaged shingle free. If the adhesive is still holding, use the pry bar carefully to separate it.

Step 3 — Prepare and Cut the New Shingle

Drive nails flush — not too shallow, not countersunk. A nail head that sticks up will eventually work its way through the shingle above it. A nail driven too deep will break through the shingle surface and lose its holding power. Firm, flush, and flat is what you’re after.

Once the new shingle is nailed, press down the tabs of the shingles above it to re-engage the adhesive seal. In cold weather, the adhesive won’t re-bond on its own — apply a small dab of roofing cement under each tab and press firmly. This is the step a lot of people skip, and it’s the reason shingles blow off in the first storm after a DIY repair.

Step 5 — Seal and Inspect Your Work

Run a thin bead of roofing cement along the nail heads on the new shingle — especially if they’re exposed. Apply a small amount under the edges of the shingles above if they don’t lie flat. You’re not trying to glob cement everywhere; you just want every potential water entry point sealed tightly.

Step back and look at your work from several angles. The new shingle should lie flat and align cleanly with the surrounding course. There should be no lifted edges, no exposed nails, and no gaps between the new shingle and its neighbors.

Come back and check it again after the first rain. Look in your attic with a flashlight during or right after a heavy rain — if you see any daylight coming through the decking or any signs of moisture, you’ll know immediately if the repair held.
