Then switch the bypass valve over to the softened water position slowly, watching for any leaks at the softener connections.

Run a manual regeneration cycle right away — your unit’s manual will explain how. This purges the resin bed and primes it for softening. Let it complete fully before drawing water from any tap for softened use.

Step 10 — Test the Results and Enjoy the Difference

After the first regeneration cycle completes, test your water hardness again at a tap downstream of the softener. You should see a dramatic drop — ideally to 0–1 GPG. Run a few faucets to clear out any unsoftened water still sitting in the lines, then test again.

Within a week you’ll notice the difference. Dishes come out cleaner. The shower feels better. Soap actually lathers.
