Step 1 — Cut the Power and Confirm It’s Off
This is the step I go over twice with my boys before we touch anything. Go to your electrical panel and turn off the breaker that controls the exterior light you’re replacing. Don’t guess — label your breakers properly if you haven’t already. Once you flip the breaker, go back to the fixture and use your non-contact voltage tester to confirm there is no live current at the fixture. Hold the tester near the wires without touching them. No beep, no light — you’re safe to proceed. If it beeps, go back to the panel and find the right breaker.

Step 2 — Remove the Old Fixture
With the power confirmed off, remove the old light fixture. Most exterior fixtures are held in place by two screws at the base. Remove those screws and gently pull the fixture away from the wall, being careful not to yank the wires. You’ll see the fixture is connected to wires coming out of an electrical box mounted in the wall. Take a photo with your phone before disconnecting anything — you’ll thank yourself later.
Unscrew the wire nuts connecting the fixture wires to the house wires and separate them. You should see a black wire (hot), a white wire (neutral), and typically a bare copper or green wire (ground). Set the old fixture aside.
Inspect the electrical box in the wall. Make sure it’s securely mounted and rated for exterior use. If it wobbles, looks cracked, or isn’t rated for outdoor exposure, replace it before proceeding. A loose or degraded box is a hazard that no amount of good wiring will fix.
Step 3 — Prepare the New Fixture and Wires
Open your new motion-sensing fixture and read through the manufacturer instructions completely before touching the wires. Every fixture is slightly different. Some come pre-wired with a short pigtail; others require you to connect directly to the fixture’s terminal screws.
If the ends of your house wires look oxidized, dull, or nicked, use your wire stripper to expose about three-quarters of an inch of fresh copper. Clean, solid contact between wires is the difference between a fixture that works reliably and one that flickers, trips, or fails entirely.
Check that the fixture’s mounting bracket is compatible with your existing electrical box. Most modern motion lights include a universal bracket, but verify before you start connecting wires. Install the mounting bracket to the box now according to the included instructions.
Step 4 — Connect the Wires
Now the connections. Match the wires correctly:
- Black to black (hot wire)
- White to white (neutral wire)
- Bare copper or green to bare copper or green (ground wire)
Twist each pair together clockwise and secure with a wire nut. Give each connection a firm tug to make sure it doesn’t pull free. Wrap each wire nut with a layer of electrical tape for an extra layer of security — especially important on outdoor installations where temperature swings can loosen connections over time. Tuck the wires neatly into the electrical box. Don’t cram them in or force the fixture closed — if you’re fighting it, something is caught or bent. Straighten the wires and try again. Then secure the fixture base to the mounting bracket using the provided screws and tighten snugly.
Step 5 — Seal Against the Elements
Before you call it done, run a thin bead of weatherproof silicone caulk around the perimeter of the fixture base where it meets the wall. This is the step a lot of people skip, and it’s the reason water gets into boxes and causes corrosion, tripped breakers, and failed fixtures two winters later.
The same attention to sealing that matters on outdoor faucets matters here. Let the caulk skin over for about 30 minutes before moving on.
Step 6 — Restore Power and Test
Install your LED bulbs if the fixture didn’t come with them pre-installed. Go back to the panel and restore power by flipping the breaker back on. Return to the fixture.
Most motion-sensing fixtures have a test mode — a small switch or adjustment setting that allows you to activate the light with the slightest movement within a few feet rather than requiring you to walk across the whole driveway. Check your manual for how to engage test mode and use it to verify the light activates and shuts off correctly.
Once you’ve confirmed basic function, adjust the sensitivity dial, the range setting, and the duration timer. These let you control how far the sensor detects motion, how sensitive it is to small animals versus people, and how long the light stays on after activation. Most families find a 1–5 minute duration works well for driveways and back doors. For side-yard coverage, a longer duration gives you full visibility when needed.
Step 7 — Fine-Tune Placement and Angle
Motion sensors work best when aimed slightly downward, covering the approach zone to your door or driveway rather than pointing straight out horizontally. Horizontal aiming causes false triggers from cars passing on the street or neighbors moving around on their property. Aim the sensor head down and slightly outward, covering the ground area you actually care about.
Most dual-head fixtures also let you rotate the light heads independently. Position them to cover your widest useful area — typically the path from driveway to door — without shining directly into windows or neighboring yards. A little adjustment now saves a lot of frustration later.
Placement Tips for Maximum Effectiveness
One fixture in the right spot beats three in the wrong spots. For most Connecticut homes, these are the highest-value locations:

- Side yard or breezeway — covers the gap between front and back

If your home’s exterior wiring is aluminum (common in homes built in the 1960s and 1970s), stop and call a licensed electrician before proceeding. Aluminum wiring requires special connectors and handling — standard wire nuts are not rated for aluminum-to-copper connections and can create a fire hazard over time. Similarly, if you open the box and find burnt wire insulation, melted plastic, or wires that crumble when you touch them, those are signs of a larger electrical problem.
