What You’ll Need
Here’s what to gather before you start:

- Drill with a small bit — For making cord pass-through holes if needed
- Bit extension — Helps you drill in tight spaces inside cabinets
- Tape measure — Measure twice, cut nothing (these lights are stick-and-snap)
- Pencil — For marking mounting positions
- Screwdriver or drill with screwdriver bit — Some fixtures come with small mounting screws
- Cord clips or cable staples — For routing cords neatly along cabinet edges
- Wire fish tape or a straightened coat hanger — Helpful for threading cords through cabinet interiors
- Outlet strip or smart plug — So you can control all your lights from one switch or voice command
Total material cost for a typical kitchen runs between $40 and $120 depending on how many cabinets you have and what brand you choose. This is a weekend project that pays for itself in function almost immediately.
Step 1: Measure and Plan Your Layout
Start by measuring the underside of each cabinet run you want to light. Write these measurements down. Add them up to figure out how many feet of strip lighting you need, then add about 10% for waste and overlap at corners.
Decide where your outlet is. Ideally, you want to hide the power cord inside the cabinet — threading it up through a small hole in the cabinet floor and into the cabinet interior, then down to the outlet below the counter. This keeps everything tidy. If that’s not possible, you can run the cord along the back edge of the cabinet, tucked against the wall where it’s barely visible.
Plan your linking direction. Most LED strip kits allow you to connect multiple sections with connector cables. You want to plan the run so the connector cables go from cabinet to cabinet in a logical direction, ideally hiding behind cabinet faces where possible.
Step 2: Drill Your Cord Pass-Through Holes
This is where having a bit extension earns its keep. Inside the cabinet above where you want to mount your lights, you’ll drill a small hole — usually about 3/8 inch — through the cabinet floor (the bottom panel of the cabinet). This lets you thread the power cord up into the cabinet and hide it completely.
Drill toward the back corner of the cabinet interior, as far from the front face as possible. That way, even with the cabinet door open, the hole won’t be visible. Sand any rough edges so the cord doesn’t get nicked.
If you’re connecting multiple cabinet sections, you may need to drill a small hole through the cabinet side panel as well, to thread the connector cable between adjacent cabinets. Same principle — back corner, small hole, clean edges.
Step 3: Mount the Lights
Most LED strip lights come with an adhesive backing — just peel and stick to the underside of the cabinet. Before you do that, clean the surface with a dry cloth. Any grease or dust (and there’s always some on kitchen cabinet undersides) will prevent the adhesive from sticking properly. This is the step people most often skip and most often regret.
Position the strip toward the front of the cabinet underside, but not right at the edge. A setback of about two inches keeps the light strip itself hidden from view when you’re standing at the counter — you see the light, not the fixture. That’s the professional-looking difference.
If your lights come with small screw-mount brackets instead of adhesive, use them. Screw mounts hold better over time, especially in a kitchen where heat and steam are common. My 12-year-old handled mounting the first cabinet section on his own. He took his time, lined up the bracket holes carefully, and ran every screw in straight. I didn’t have to touch it.
Step 4: Connect the Sections and Route the Cords

Thread the main power cord up through the hole you drilled, through the cabinet interior, and back down to the outlet below the counter. Use a wire fish tape or bent coat hanger to guide it through if needed. Inside the cabinet, you can tuck the excess cord into the back corner — it’ll be hidden behind whatever you store there.
At the outlet end, you have a few options. Plugging directly into a single outlet works fine. But I prefer using a smart outlet strip — it lets me turn all the under-cabinet lights on and off from one button, or even schedule them automatically. Step 5: Test, Adjust, and Enjoy
Plug in the system and turn it on before you close everything up and call it done. Walk the full length of the counter. Look for any sections that aren’t fully adhered, any cables that are kinked, or any sections that aren’t lighting. Fix anything that needs fixing now, before the adhesive fully cures and the cords are tucked in tight.
Check for hotspots or shadows. If one section of counter is noticeably darker than the rest, you may need to adjust the strip position slightly forward or add a short extension piece. Most quality linkable kits have enough flexibility to fine-tune without starting over.
Once everything looks right, use cord clips along any exposed cable runs to press them flat against the wall or cabinet edge. These little plastic clips are inexpensive, paintable, and make the difference between an installation that looks DIY and one that looks intentional.
Color Temperature: The Detail That Changes Everything
If you walked away from this guide with only one piece of advice beyond the steps, let it be this: pay attention to color temperature. It’s measured in Kelvins, and it affects how your entire kitchen feels.
