Closet Build Part 2: Running Electrical, Insulating the Toilet Stack, and First Sheetrock

Hey, it’s Steve from CT Home Repair and Tutoring LLC.

Last time we framed the new closet under the upstairs bathroom plumbing. This week I knocked out the electrical, insulated around the toilet stack for noise control, and started hanging sheetrock. Everything is beginner-friendly — I’m using the same tools and techniques I teach in every video.

1. Running the Electrical (Light + Outlet)

I pulled 14/2 Romex from an existing circuit, added a new junction box towards the top of the closet ( this wont really be seen once all is said and done), and ran down to a switch and outlet. All connections are in accessible boxes (code in Connecticut) and everything is properly stapled and supported.

2. Insulating Around the Toilet Stack (Noise Killer)

The toilet stack used to echo every flush into the guest bedroom. I packed R-13 (and some leftover R-11) fiberglass around the pipes and stapled it securely with insulation supports — no more waterfall sounds downstairs.

3. First Sheetrock – The Toilet Stack Side

Hung ½″ drywall on the pipe side first, cut holes for the outlet and switch boxes, and screwed everything to the studs every 8–12 inches. It’s already starting to look like a real closet instead of a construction zone.

Next Up

Finishing the rest of the sheetrock, taping/mudding, sanding, priming, and installing the door. Then it’s shelves, paint, and a finished closet that hides plumbing, kills noise, and actually adds usable storage.

If you’ve ever wanted to turn wasted space under bathroom plumbing into something useful (and quiet!), stick with me — the reveal is coming soon.

Got a noisy pipe or awkward corner in your house? Drop it in the comments — I’ll see if it’s worth a tutorial.
